“This new driver I have, the R9 driver, it's just amazing how well it goes. I'm not only hitting it straight, but I'm hitting it farther than I was before." Sergio Carcia

“This is not only the longest but the best looking driver TaylorMade have produced since the R7 Quad.” Justin Rose

R9 Driver Best Buy for 2009

Another superb driver from Taylormade. I purchased the R7 two years ago and was taken aback by the quality and the added bonus of being able to tweak the club head by adjusting the weights. So I was really looking forward to trying out the Taylor Made R9 driver.
My local driving range managed to get hold of a demo club and after a quick run down with the Pro on how to adjust the shaft I headed for the bays. The amount of deviation on the ball flight that can be achieved is beyond belief. Its like having a trick club in your bag. But trust me the R9 is no gimmick.
The taylor made R9 driver is a serious club and its ability to shape shots by moving the weights and setting the shaft to your own required flight characteristics is just a complete revelation. OK you will have to spend a bit of time on the range to get the settings correct but the results are outstanding. Within 30 minutes I had set up the R9 driver to give me the same ball flight that I had on the old R7 but now I could also make fine adjustments to give a slightly more penetrating flight.
This resulted in an increase in distance of about 30 yards and I was no slouch of the tee with the R7. My ball flight is now a controlled draw that booms a hell of a long way.
Oh, by the way did I mention what a great looking club this is. The 420cc head may seem a step backwards to some, but I feel that the smaller head sits better at address than the 460cc bricks that have been all the rage for the past few years.
The finest looking Taylor Made driver yet.

Taylor Made triumph again with the R9 Driver

Having been a Taylor Made stalwart for most of my playing career it seemed the natural option to upgrade from my trusty R7 Quad that has kept me in good stead for the last 3 years. But as always before departing with my well earned cash I thought it to be prudent to check out the new Taylor Made R9 driver on the range. This is where I hit a brick wall. Trying to get hold of one these to demo was going to be feat in it self. As luck had it a friend who is forever upgrading his equipment took the plunge and duly bought one.
I normally favour a power fade and have the weights on my R7 setup to help overcome a power slice which it seems to have coped with admirably. Setting up the weights on the new R9 driver was a breeze, but getting the loft and lie configured properly required a read of the supplied manual. A few minutes later I had the head on the R9 set up to the R+ position which claims to produce a controlled fade. A bucket of ball later I still wasn't convinced that this was the right setting for my type of swing. A quick flip thru the manual and I decided to go for the neutral set up but moved the weights to another combo. What happened next totally blew me away. The next session of drives achieved a ball flight that I never thought possible without me having to undertake a complete swing change. The drives produced a soaring high arc with a slight right to left draw that carried the ball well over 260 yards. I am pretty sure that the Taylormade R9 driver would give me consistent drives with carry and roll-out in the 300 yard region in the summer months.
